THE HOME SCREEN has always been at the center of the iPhone experience. At WWDC, Apple signaled that we’re moving on.

With iOS 9, the bulk of interaction will happen elsewhere, dispersed among intelligent notification panels, powerful search tools, and context-specific suggestions that put relevant apps a flick away. The dependable home screen will still exist, but for the first time, it feels secondary. These days, the smartphone experience is just too fast and fluid to be pinned to a grid.

From birth, the home screen was the iPhone’s face to the world. It was the first thing that popped up when Steve Jobs swiped his finger across the first iPhone’s lock screen on stage in 2007. Looking back at that event, it’s remarkable how little has changed. Today’s home screen has more real estate and less gloss, but beyond that, the two are identical.

In the early days, the home screen was crucial to the iPhone’s appeal. For a gadget that was many gadgets in one—a phone, an iPod, and an Internet communicator, not to mention a camera, a map, and more—the orderly grid of icons organized functionality in a perfectly uncomplicated way. To someone coming from a PC, the home screen was the desktop and Start button all in one. It was so important that it got its own dedicated button. No matter what you were doing on your phone, if you pressed the thumb-sized disc below the screen, you were safely shuttled home.

But as we became familiar with smartphones, we came to care less about the tidy comforts of the home screen. Gradually, Apple gave us new ways to move around. The multitasking tray offered a quick shortcut for jumping between apps instead of returning to the central hub of the home screen every time. As iPhone users accumulated pages of apps, Spotlight became a quick way to find the desired one.

More recently, we’ve seen interaction shift to the lock screen. Interactive notifications let iPhone users bypass the home screen and go straight to the relevant app. The brilliant camera shortcut, which lets you access the lens just by swiping up on the lock screen, is another example. These changes reflect one basic fact: Mobile life is too fast to be routed through the home screen.

The next version of iOS clearly reflects this reality. The tentpole feature is Proactive Assistant. Following Google Now’s lead, iOS 9 will try to anticipate what you need when you need it. If you fire up NYT Now each morning right when you wake up, iOS 9 will endeavor to note the habit and make the app available in the morning as a shortcut on the lock screen. When you plug in headphones, the new OS will serve up music based on your location, eliminating the need to find the music app. These new features join the lock screen’s current offerings for circumventing the home screen grid: the swipe-up control center and swipe-down “today” window.

Aside from these shortcuts, iOS 9 will offer a new interactive hub in the form of a personalized search panel. Here, sitting to the left of the home screen, you’ll see shortcuts for contacts and apps, both filtered by context. It’s like the Home Screen 2.0—instead of a dumb grid, it guesses who you might want to talk to or what you might want to do, based on where you are, what time it is, and what you’re doing. It’s worth noting that the Apple Watchalready works like this. On the wrist, notifications and messaging shortcuts take precedent over the bubbly home screen of apps.

The most important part of the new panel is a souped-up version of search. In terms of how we use our phones, it could prove the most transformative feature of all. Search in iOS 9 will pull information and functionality out of apps themselves and drop it right into the results. A search for a sports score, for example, will give you a live card with the score, just like Google does on the web. Thanks to a new API, third-party apps can make their own content available. Meanwhile, Siri will gain new powers, like the ability to “deep link” reminders and messages to specific packets of content inside other apps.

All of this represents a big shift. Answers, info, and functionality that once existed only as icons on your home screen soon will be baked right into search, through both text and voice, via Siri. Back in the day, if you wanted to look up a movie review, you opened the Rotten Tomatoes app. If you wanted to convert cups to quarts, you opened your favorite conversion app. If you wanted to set a reminder … well, you get it. Soon, search will be the easiest way to do all of these things. Not just to access these apps but to actually use them. And when the act of checking a sports score or reading a movie review is fully subsumed into search, you’re not just talking about the end of the home screen—you’re talking about the end of apps themselves.

This is still a ways off. Apps will hang around for the foreseeable future. Apple will still champion bite-size software and make life-affirming TV ads showing off stargazing applications and deep sea-diving applications and applications that analyze your baseball swing. But for most of the stuff you do on your phone every day, you can expect to see functionality extracted and repackaged and sprinkled throughout your phone’s interface. Little by little, apps will soften and dissolve. Siri and search will become more and more capable. Utility will continue to leave the home screen and settle in other places where it’s slightly more convenient.

For now, the stoic home screen is still around, still right there at the heart of the iPhone. But chances are you’ll see it less and less. Increasingly, the action is buzzing around above it, beside it, above it, and underneath it. We’ve come a long way in a short time on mobile. We’re no longer homebodies.

Apple on Monday unveiled Apple Music, a new streaming music service, live radio station and social network.

Apple (AAPLTech30) Music costs $9.99 a month, similar to several rival streaming music services.

Among its standout features is a "For You" tab that creates playlists and suggests songs that cater to your music palate by learning your interests as you go. It also has a music discovery engine called "New," which includes the latest popular tracks.

Apple Music is also integrated with Siri, helping you you switch from today's top chart music to a piece from 1980's with a simple voice command.

"It will change the way you experience music forever," said Apple CEO Tim Cook at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco on Monday.

The Apple Music service also features Beats 1, a worldwide radio station, broadcasting 24/7 from New York, Los Angeles and London. Apple says the the radio station is designed to offer an old-fashioned human-curated music playlist for the digital age.

"Algorithms alone can't do that emotional task," said Jimmy Iovine, Apple's music chief.

The new service also features "Connect," a social network that allows music listeners to connect with their favorite artists.

Apple Music will be available June 30 for iPhone, Mac and iPad users, and it will offer the first three months free. Apple wants to make the service available to as many customers as possible, so it will come to Android devices and PCs down the line. And if you have a lot of people in the house, you can get a family plan for up to six people for $14.99.

Apple Music is entering an increasingly competitive space of more than a dozen streaming rivals, including Spotify, Tidal, Pandora (P), iHeartRadio and many, many others.

Apple revolutionized digital music in 2003 with its creation of the iTunes music store. But a growing number of music lovers are migrating to streaming music alternatives, threatening Apple's music business model.

The company bought Beats last year for $3 billion, a move that was widely believed to help Apple launch a better streaming music option than its poorly received Pandora-like iTunes Radio service.

Apple also tried to create a music social network with iTunes Ping in 2010. But the social media platform failed, and Apple killed it off two years later.

How Apple Music stacks up to the competition

Spotify. Apple Music's main source of competition charges a similar price of $9.99 per month for a premium account, but it also offers a free version too -- something Apple doesn't offer.

With more than 15 million paid subscribers and 60 million active users, Spotify has a music database of 30 million songs and is available in 58 countries. Spotify also allows its paid users to download music into their devices and play music offline.

Spotify offers suggested music playlist categorized by genre. Its latest feature tracks your rhythm when you exercise and suggest song based on it -- something Apple's Iovine criticized as being glitchy.

Pandora. Like Spotify, Pandora offers both free accounts and a paid subscription of $4.99 per month. The self-described online personalized radio station creates stations for listeners but does not play individual songs. Pandora has a catalog of over one million songs, which is relatively puny. But with over 200 million registered users, Pandora is by far the most-used streaming music app in the world.

Rhapsody. Its $4.99 per month "Unradio" plan works like Pandora, while its premium $9.99 per month plan functions like Spotify. Rhapsody has over two million paid subscribers worldwide and more than 35 million songs. Unlike rivals, Rhapsody allows multiple users on one account with no additional cost.

Beats. Apple-owned Beats offers over 20 million songs on its catalog, which is available for $9.99 a month.

Tidal -- Jay Z's new offering lets customers stream "HD" music at a high bitrate for $19.99 a month.

Now Control Your Home with Apple's HomeKit : Promise comes True in June


A year ago, Apple announced it would make your home a lot smarter with its Siri-controlled HomeKit.
iOS 8 introduces HomeKit, a high-level device connectivity framework enabling apps to interact with physical accessories in the world around us.

App Developers

If your iOS app is primarily designed to provide home configuration or home automation services such as turning on a light or opening a garage door. HomeKit APIs used for communicating with HomeKit accessories.
Apple announced to make it soon. Now, it seems that promise is coming true in just a few weeks. Third-party devices enabled with HomeKit are slated to come to market in June, an Apple spokesman told the newspaper.
The HomeKit app works off of iOS and a remote control for operating home gadgets such as thermostats, garage doors, lights and cameras.
The comments from the Apple spokesman contrast with a report on Thursday that stated HomeKit would be delayed until September.
HomeKit is a framework in iOS 8 for communicating with and controlling connected accessories in a user’s home. You can enable users to discover HomeKit accessories in their home and configure them, or you can create actions to control those devices. Users can group actions together and trigger them using Siri.

5 can't-miss apps: 'Sheepop,' Clinique, Nat Geo View and more

Between freedom-loving llamas on the loose in Arizona and the dress that broke the Internet, you may have overlooked some of this week's best new apps.
Luckily, each weekend, we round up our favorite new and updated apps, so you won't miss out.
This week's list includes a new photo-focused app from National Geographic, a game calledSheepop that challenges you to throw sheep, and an app to help you manage all your subscription services.

Clinique

Clinique came out with a revamped version of its flagship app this week that includes a fresh new design and extra personalization features.
The new stuff: The app now uses your location to provide personalized “skin forecasts” that recommend skincare routines and products based on your location and skin type. Clinique also stepped up its consultant feature, giving you the ability to video chat with one of its many makeup consultants. Available Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET, the consultants provide expert advice, product recommendations and tips on how to change your daily routine to fit your needs.
Keep an eye on: The app’s many tips and tricks, articles and quizzes, which provide a daily refresher on the dos and don’ts of how to get the most out of your products.
Pro tip: Take the app’s skin diagnostic test to get even more targeted recommendations for your specific skin type.

Nat Geo View

Nat Geo View, the latest app from National Geographic, offers a daily digest of some of the publication’s best photos and video, as well as the story behind those images.
Why we like it: One of the best parts of National Geographic is its stunning visuals, and this app provides some of the best it has to offer in an easy-to-view format. The app also includes just the right amount of context without being overwhelming.
Keep an eye on: Archival photos that go back more than 100 years and a dedicated Instagram section, which showcases some of the best pics fromNational Geographic's feed, taken by its photographers around the world.
Pro tip: Miss a day? The menu in the app's right-hand corner enables you to go back and view posts from the previous week

SubscriptMe

If you have a paid subscription to multiple apps, SubscriptMe can help you keep tabs on all of them -- whether you signed up for a free trial, or have a recurring payment you regularly make.
How it works: SubscriptMe automatically detects all the apps on your phone that use a subscription model. Select the ones you pay for, and the app will set up a tracker that keeps tabs on how much you pay, when your bill is due and how long you’ve subscribed to the service.

'Sheepop'

We like it for: Jumping sheep plus large bodies of water equals whimsical sweet spot. Really simple, yet addictive gameplay makes for the perfect subway companion.
Watch out for: It might just be the most maddeningly addictive game since Flappy Bird. You could very well go crazy trying to beat your high score of “3."
Pro tip: We don’t even know. Try to get more than 3.

OneMinute

OneMinute aims to crowdsource the answer to one question: What is everyone doing right now?
How it works: Each day, all the app’s users receive just one notification. It occurs at a different time every day, all users get the notification simultaneously. Once you receive it, you have just one minute to start snapping photos of whatever is around you. Once that minute is up, you can view what everyone else captured in the app’s feed.
Keep an eye on: The lower-right corner of the photos in the feed, where you can see the city in which the image was taken, is your only hint of the photographer's identity.
Pro tip: OneMinute crops the photos into narrow rectangles, so make sure you position the camera wisely during the one-minute window

VLC gets first major release across Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Windows RT, and Android TV


 

 

 

VideoLAN today launched what is arguably the biggest release of VLC to date: an update for the desktop coordinated with new versions across all major mobile platforms. The world’s most used media player just got massive a cross-platform push.

The company told VentureBeat that the releases are the result of more than a year of volunteer work on the VLC engine and thelibVLC library. As a result, VLC has gained numerous new features, has seen more than 1,000 bugs fixed, and has significantly increased its scope of supported formats.

Without further ado, here are the new releases:

One major cross-platform addition is that VLC now automatically detects rotated videos. It can then rotate them using hardware acceleration (supported for MP4/MOV, MKV, and raw H264) for proper consumption: no more stupid vertical videos!

For all platforms, the new version adds support for Digital Cinema Package to play native movie theater formats, compatibility for “a very large number of unusual codecs,” and “vastly improved compatibility” for UltraHD video codecs like VP9 and H265, including encoding, as well as problematic files in Ogg, MP4, and WMV. Now let’s take a closer look platform-by-platform.

Windows, Mac, and Linux

First and foremost, VLC media player 2.2.0 adds a feature that has been supported on VLC mobile for quite some time: resume playback where you left off. This might not seem like a big deal at first, but if you remember all those times you’ve accidentally closed VLC, or opened a new video and lost your place in the first one, you’ll love this addition.

Although extensions have been available for a long time now, VLC for the desktop now has an in-app downloader, similar to what is available in Mozilla Firefox. Oh, and there’s also an extension specifically for downloading subtitles.

The desktop app has also gained experimental support for Interactive Menus on BluRays (BD-J). Last but not least, Mac users will notice a new interface on OS X Yosemite.

Android

VLC for Android arrived in beta back in July 2012, and while VLC 1.0.0 was released briefly on Google Play earlier this month, VideoLAN told VentureBeat that was still a prerelease build meant for testers. Now it’s finally out of beta and available as a stable version to the masses after more than 30 months of development.

The biggest highlight on Android is that the user interface has been rewritten to align with Google’s Material Design mantra.

iOS

VLC for iOS has had a long, troubled history, including launching, being pulled, and relaunching on the App Store. Most recently, it properly returned in July 2013, wasredesigned for iOS 7 in January 2014, and then disappeared again in September 2014 around when iOS 8 arrived. Now it’s back, again.

The biggest highlight on iOS is that support for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus has been added.

Windows Phone, Windows RT, and Android TV

While it may seem odd at first to lump these three platforms together, they do share one major thing in common: VLC was only offered on them as private test builds for select testers. Now the three are all getting their first public beta release.

Apps for Windows RT and Windows Phone have been a long time coming. In fact, aKickstarter for the Windows RT version (the Metro app that also works on Windows 8) successfully concluded in December 2012. Both apps have now been merged, and while there are no major features added (just bugs fixes and stability improvements), the beta tag isn’t quite ready to come off just yet.

The Android TV app is still very basic, although a lot of the core work is done since it is based on the main Android app. The main features right now are video and audio browsing, a settings page, and recommendations.

What’s next

“I’m very happy [with] these releases,” Jean-Baptiste Kempf, lead developer and president of VideoLAN, said in a statement. “Moving VLC to the mobile world was difficult, but the difficult is done. VLC runs everywhere, plays everything. We’re working on many new features for VLC 3.0.0 to finish what we’ve started here.”

VLC 3.0.0 is currently slated for release “later this year.” This next major release will bring hardware decoding and acceleration to more platforms, better support for MP4, adaptive streaming, and TS streams, as well as basic Google Chromecast integration.

Just over two weeks ago, we delivered the first version of Outlook for iOS and Android devices. We’ve heard from many of you that enjoy how Outlook brings together the core tools you need to get things done—your email, calendar, contacts and files—helping you get more done even on the smallest screen.
We promised to deliver updates to Outlook every few weeks and we’ve been listening closely to your feedback. Today, we are happy to share some of the features we’ve added over the past two weeks.

IT controls

While our first release focused on bringing a great end-user experience to market, we are also well underway building the IT controls that our business customers require.

PIN lock

Outlook now implements password enforcement using Exchange ActiveSync. If your company email policy requires that devices have a password in order to sync mail, Outlook will enforce this at the device level. How this works on iOS and Android devices varies slightly, based on the available controls provided by Apple and Google.
On iOS devices, Outlook will check to make sure a passcode is properly set. In the event a passcode is not set, it will prompt users to set one up in iOS settings. Until the passcode is setup, the user will be unable to access Outlook.
Outlook for iOS only runs on iOS 8.0 or later. These devices are shipped with built-in encryption, which Outlook uses once the passcode is enabled to encrypt all the data Outlook stores locally on the device. Therefore, iOS devices will be encrypted whether the Office 365 or Exchange policy requires this or not.
Outlook for iOS enforces simple passcode. Encryption is enabled by default.
On Android devices, Outlook will enforce screen lock rules. Further, Google provides controls that allow Outlook to honor additional Office 365 and Exchange policies regarding password length and complexity requirements and the number of allowable screen-unlock attempts before wiping the phone. It will also encourage storage encryption if it is not enabled. Outlook will guide users through this process with a step-by-step walkthrough.
Devices that do not support these security settings will not be able to connect to an account.
Outlook for Android enforces passwords including length and complexity requirements, storage encryption and will monitor screen-unlock attempts to prevent un-authorized access.

Quicker remote wipe execution

We’ve also made improvements to how quickly admin-led remote wipes are executed—they now happen within seconds. As before, this is an app-level wipe, not a device wipe. The Outlook app will reset and Outlook email, calendar, contacts and files data will be removed from the device, as well as from Outlook’s cloud components. The wipe will not affect any of the user’s personal apps and information.

User-focused features

We’ve also delivered on several of the top feature requests we’ve received in the past two weeks.

IMAP support

Outlook now supports the ability to sync mail from email providers that support IMAP, like AOL.com and Comcast.net. We use IDLE whenever possible, which means Outlook can provide push-like behavior even with IMAP accounts. If the IMAP server doesn’t support IDLE, Outlook will sync every few minutes.
Outlook now connects to email services that support IMAP.

Toggle conversation view for iOS

By default, Outlook organizes your email into conversations, where all messages with the same subject line are grouped together. In iOS, you can now turn this feature off if you’d prefer to see each email individually in your mailbox. Just go toSettings > Organize Mail by Thread and adjust the toggle to match your desired preference.

We expect to bring this capability to Android soon.

Customize swipe gestures on Android

Outlook’s swipe gestures make rapid email triage literally a one touch experience. You can swipe right or left to take actions like archive, delete, move, flag, mark as read/unread or schedule. Unlike other email apps, Outlook lets you personalize these swipe gestures to match your unique email habits. Customization was previously only available on iOS, and is now available on Android.

Change folders for swipe gestures

For the Archive and Schedule swipe gestures, you can now choose and change your default folders at any time. Previously, Outlook prompted you to choose a folder for these actions during first use. Now when your email habits change, you can adjust these by going to Settings > Choose an account > Advanced Settings > System Folders.
Set your Archive folder and change it later if necessary in Settings.

A. Outlook takes advantage of the controls available to Microsoft as a 3rd party application developer. As we enable support for Microsoft Intune mobile device management and as Apple makes more controls available, we will continue to improve this capability.

Q. OWA for iPhone/iPad/Android enforced PIN lock at the app-level. Why is Outlook enforcing PIN at the device level?

A. After talking with our customers and evaluating iOS and Android capabilities, we believe a device-level PIN is the best experience for customers for both convenience and security. An app-level PIN means you often have to enter two different PINs in order to access your email, which is cumbersome. Further, a device level PIN means we can take advantage of features like native device encryption, TouchID on iOS and Smart Lock on Android. Remote Wipe is still implemented at the app-level, which means your personal applications and data will be unaffected when Outlook is wiped. We will evaluate this approach in response to your feedback and as we enable support for Microsoft Intune mobile device management.

Gartner’s latest analysis of the sales figures for Q3 2014 gives Android a commanding lead in terms of market share. Of the 301 million smartphones sold, Android’s market share is 83.1 percent, Apple’s iOS has 12.7 percent, Windows Phone clocks in at 3%, and everybody else is under 1%.

A worrying trend for the established players such as Samsung , Sony, and HTC, is where sales are coming from. The old guard is established in saturated western markets with little opportunity for growth, while the new companies on the rise (including Huawei and Xiaomi) are coming on strong in the BRIC territories and have many more opportunities to increase sales.

Android 5.1 Lollipop Update Details

Alleged details on Android 5.1 were found online this week by AndroidPit. Although many consumer handsets have still to receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop update (or the 5.0.1 point release), Google is pushing ahead with a significant point release to address many issues around the OS.

[This update] includes but is not limited to improvements to RAM management, addressing the ‘sudden app closures’ bug, and correcting the excessive consumption of network devices when Wi-Fi is used. It also includes the return of ‘silent mode’ which was removed from Android 5.0, after proving a popular feature in previous versions of Google’s mobile operating system.


One thing to note, given the ninety-day window that many manufactures are using between Google’ launch of an OS and when it can be expected over-the-air, a Feb 2015 release of Android 5.1 could mean the bug fixes and updates will not arrive to consumer handset until June or July next year.

If Google want to look at addressing the pain points of Android in 2015, the excessive time to roll out firmware updates would be a good place to start. In the meantime, consumers are going to have a long wait for Android 5.0, and an even longer wait for Android 5.1 to fix the bugs.

Google To Retire The Nexus 5 In The Name Of Advertising?

Many of us here on the Forbes Tech Team initially questioned Google’s decision to retain the Nexus 5 at the launch of the Nexus 6. As the reviews of the Nexus 6 came in, it became clear that the newer phablet was more a complement to the venerable five-inch screened reference design rather than a direct replacement.

Just as it began to make sense, news reached us that the Nexus 5 is being set up for a quiet retirement as 2015 dawns. Whether stocks will not be replenished, or if it will simply leave a Google+ status that it’s just going outside for some time, the days of the Nexus 5 appear to be drawing to a close. Could the reason be a larger screen is better for displaying adverts?

It should not be a surprise that Google is retiring the Nexus 5 and pushing attention onto the phablet and tablet spaces of the Android ecosystem. For all they services, software, hardware, and crazy ideas that Google pushes out, the company is still based around selling advertising.

When the web browser on your desktop ruled, Google monopolised the display ad business. Now that everyone is moving their consumption towards mobile devices, Google must change with the times and effectively monetize the eyeballs reading from hundreds of millions of screens around the world. A larger screen provides more space for interaction, more opportunity for attractive and eye-catching advertising, and more space to place advertising around content.

Is Samsung Ready To Take On Apple Pay?

The success of Apple Pay has been noted by many, and it will come as a complete surprise to find out that Samsung is looking to launch a similar product early next year. Jason Del Ray at Re/Code reports on the South Korean’s ongoing talks with the Boston-based LoopPay:

LoopPay’s technology can wirelessly transmit the same information stored on a debit or credit card’s magnetic stripe to a store’s checkout equipment without swiping a card. The company has embedded the technology, which it calls magnetic secure transmission, into a few hardware products it sells directly to consumers: A fob, as well as a LoopPay digital payment card that can be used on its own or while secured in a special LoopPay smartphone case. To complete a purchase, LoopPay users tap any of these devices near the spot on a store’s credit card terminal where a card is usually swiped.


The timing of ‘early 2015′ would fit in with the launch of the Galaxy S5, widely expected to be late in Q1 2015 to be available in April 2015. LoopPay’s UI looks remarkably like Apple’s PassBook system, and is also designed to work with existing mag-stripe card readers.

Android OS Built-In To Your Car

While Android Auto brings a large touch-based UI suitable for navigating your smartphone while driving and interfacing with your car’s systems, Google’s Android M is an operating system for your car that would run as a standalone Android environment, without the requirement of a secondary handset. Dave Altavilla looks at the new flavor of Android.

A recent tip via Reuters tells of the forthcoming ‘Android M’ operating system which will have the ability to become a much more central command and control function of the vehicle, rather than just a feature add. In fact, it’s being reported that cars would not need an Android handset connected to them at all and the OS would function autonomously.  Further, with an always-on internet connection, various Google services like Maps, Play Music and Google Now will always be accessible.  Sure, your Android phone could synch to it but it wouldn’t need to. Also, your Google account and other family members’ accounts could be pre-loaded into the system and at the ready with your customizations and personal preferences at the ready.


The opportunities to provide services and gather real-world data on users makes this an interesting diversion for Google. 

Oppo R5

The Thinnest Smartphone On Sale… In The World

There’s an arms race by manufacturers to build and release the thinnest smartphone possible. While the 4.85 millimetre mark of the Oppo R5 has already been bettered at the design and manufacturing stage, this ultra-thin handset is currently the thinnest smartphone on sale.

Oppo has had to make a number of compromises to get the dimensions down, and while they don’t cripple the phone, you do need to be aware of them if the fashionable look is going to be your look for 2015.

With the R5, Oppo has sidestepped the arms race of flagships with ever faster processors, increased memory, larger screens, and bigger specifications. It focuses on one area – size – and does almost everything to keep the handset as thin as possible, while still remaining practical to use.

Yes, there are concerns and limitations about endurance and battery life (the R5 would be a perfect handset to have wireless charging for continually topping up the battery) but I think that it’s right that Oppo has tried something else in terms of design goals with the R5. As long as you are aware that this handset is going to need careful power management throughout the day, you are going to enjoy it.


And Finally…

Photographers looking for more from their smartphone cameras should be looking to pick up a Nexus device. Google has provided access to the RAW image file format for developers (reports Stephen Shankland for CNet).

Raw support isn’t likely to appeal to mainstream shooters. HDR (high dynamic range) technology already expands what an ordinary JPEG can do by layering multiple frames at varying exposures to create a single image with greater luminosity. But the more mobile-phone cameras improve, the more enthusiasts will come to rely on them, and the more appealing raw support will become.

Raw photography requires people to fiddle with their photos in software that acts like a digital darkroom. For people who like that sort of thing — and there are plenty — raw photos give control to the photographer instead of going with processing assumptions that the camera makes. Cameras ordinarily bake those assumptions into JPEG images, but raw photos leave the original data intact for maximum flexibility.


Applications such as FV-5 have already been updated to allow RAW to be a user-option.
